Capturing light in a bottle
Thinking of outdoor sports photography reminds me of a kid running around, trying to catch a lightning bug into a glass jar. Unlike the slow-moving lightning bug, the camera captures something far more spectacular... The Sun's rays.
Right as your family member is about to swing that bat, catch that football, or kick that soccer ball, They're hit by the Sun's rays that have traveled 93 million miles to get to earth. The sunlight then crashes into our loved ones and is reflected toward the camera.
Like the light rays, the camera now takes its turn at accomplishing a spectacular feat. The camera takes this light from our family members and bends the light through its multiple lenses. This incoming light hits the image sensor, breaking it into millions of pixels. The sensor measures the color and brightness of each pixel and stores it as a number.
So, the next time you look at a photograph, I hope you let your childish imagination think of it as capturing a lightning bug in a bottle.
